Don O'Reilly

Don O'Reilly was a reporter, photographer, and author. While working on the Washington Post after World War II, he became the founding editor of Speed Age Magazine, the first national monthly magazine devoted to reporting racing news.

In 1953 he became manager of the NASCAR News Bureau and six years later was named one of the first two employees of the Atlanta Raceway when he was appointed to be the public relations director. In 1964 he joined Dynamic Films, Inc., as manager of its automotive division and wrote documentaries for ABC TV's Wide World of Sports and several automobile manufacturers.

He later worked as a public relations specialist for American Motors and as bureau chief, photographer, and reporter for the Daytona Beach News-Journal. During these years, he also was a broadcaster for the Mutual, ABC, and NBC networks and wrote a syndicated column and feature articles for numerous magazines. He was the author of several books, including Mr. Hockey: the World of Gordie Howe, Auto Racing Guide, and The Road to Daytona.

Mr. O'Reilly was elected to the National Auto Racing Hall of Fame by the National Old Timers Auto Racing Club of Flemington, NJ, and was named a Living Legend of Auto Racing by Living Legends, Port Orange, FL. He was 87 years old when he died in Daytona Beach in December 2000.

More information of the collection is available in the
