The University Archives consist of the non-current, permanently valuable
official records of the University dating from its establishment in
1946 as the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina.
The University is unusually fortunate in having most of the administrative
records from the early years to the present day. In addition, the Archives
contain records of the faculty, minutes of the student legislature,
theses, photographs and committee files.
Copies of all University publications are deposited in the Archives,
including the student newspaper and literary magazine, the University
catalog and the alumni magazine.
Supplementing these official records are collections of personal papers
of several individuals who were instrumental in the University's early
growth. These collections include the papers of Bonnie
E. Cone , who served as director/president (1947-65), acting chancellor
(1965-66), and vice chancellor (1966-73); W.A.
"Woody" Kennedy , a leader in the establishment of Charlotte College
as a four-year school; transcripts of speeches by Oliver
Rowe in support of the same movement; files of trustee Addison
Reese relating to the selection of the present site of the University
and early construction on the new campus; Elmer
H. Garinger , Charlotte educator and state legislator who led passage
of legislation that created UNC Charlotte in 1965; and material collected
by Dr.
Robert Rieke in writing his history of UNC Charlotte.
A somewhat different perspective on University life is provided in
a collection of student cultural autobiographies, research papers, and
other material from an innovative course on women's history (Women's
Literature from a Regional Perspective) taught in 1977-78 by Dr.
Ann C. Carver .
