The Latta Family Letters, 1824 - 1830
James Latta immigrated from Ireland in 1785 to become a successful merchant and farmer in northern Mecklenburg County. The home he built in c.1800 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public for tours.
The ten letters preserved in Special Collections, Atkins Library, offer a glimpse into the daily lives of James Latta and his family members during the years 1824-1830. The letters were donated by the McAlister Family, descendants of James Latta through his daughter Nancy.
