HISTORICAL NOTE

The city public school system began in 1880 when voters approved a special school tax and elected a board of school commissioners. Separate schools for white and black children opened in 1882. In 1957, the Board of School Commissioners changed its name to the Charlotte City Board of Education. Three years later, in 1960, the city and county systems combined to form the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System.
