| Dean Wallace Colvard was born in Grassy Creek,
N.C. on July 10, 1913. He attended Berea College (B.A., 1935), the University
of Missouri in Columbia (M.A., 1938), and Purdue University (Ph.D., 1950).
Colvard taught at Brevard College (1935 37) and served as a professor of
Animal Science (1947 53) and dean of Agriculture (1953 60) at North Carolina
State College in Raleigh. Colvard became president of Mississippi State
University in 1960. He was named UNC Charlotte's first chancellor in 1966,
a post he held until his retirement in 1978. Colvard subsequently was involved
in the development of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics,
for which he served as chairman of the board of trustees. He also is the
author of Mixed Emotions (1985) and coauthor of Knowledge is Power (1987)
and University Research Park (1988). He and his wife, Martha, reside in

| This collection documents Colvard's activities
as an administrator in higher education, particularly through speeches given
at Mississippi State University and UNC Charlotte, correspondence, and trustee
files of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The establishment
and development of University Research Park at UNC Charlotte is documented
by interviews conducted by Colvard between 1979 and 1988. The papers do
not reflect his official files as chief administrator of MSU and UNCC, which
are maintained in the archives of the respective institutions. For additional
biographical material, 1947-76, and speeches, 1958-75, see especially the
UNCC Archives, Files of the Director of Public Information and Publication,
1961-77, box 2, folders 18 and 19. The collection is organized in three
series: |
