|
| Elmer Henry Garinger was born on July 13, 1891
in Mount Vernon, Mo. He received a B.A. from the University of Missouri,
Columbia, in 1916. During World War I, Garinger served as a medical corpsman
in the U.S. Army, 10th Division. He began his teaching career at Peabody
College in 1920. The following year, Garinger became principal of Alexander
Graham Junior High School in Charlotte. In 1923, he was named principal
of Central High School in Charlotte. During the 1930s, Garinger received
master's (1934) and doctoral (1935) degrees from Columbia University. His
tenure at Central lasted until 1945, when he became associate superintendent
of Charlotte City Schools. Garinger was promoted to superintendent in 1949
and, in 1960, he became the first superintendent of the consolidated Charlotte
Mecklenburg School System. After his retirement in 1962, Garinger served
two terms in the North Carolina General Assembly as a representative for
Mecklenburg County (1963, 1965). As a member of the General Assembly, Garinger
was a leader in passing legislation that created UNC Charlotte in 1965.
The Garinger Building at UNCC is named in his honor. Garinger was married
to Katherine Elizabeth Thomas. He died in Charlotte on August 21, 1982.
