Biographical Note

Mary Norton Kratt is an author of varied talents and whose chief interests centered on traditional Southern culture, which is evidenced in nearly all of her writing--documentary, essays, and poetry. According to a promotional flier for one of her poetry books (On the Steep Side) she grew up in West Virginia, and was born there around 1937. She attended Charlotte Central High School, and worked on the school newspaper there. Later, she married Emil Kratt, and lawyer, and had three children: Bill, Laura and Mary Hunter.

Kratt matriculated through Agnes Scott College and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, receiving degrees in English literature from both schools. She later won the Blumenthal Writers and Readers Series twice, and the Fortner Writer-in-Community Award from St. Andrews College in 1994. She has also won the Brockman/Campbell Poetry Book Award. She has at least sixteen published books to her credit--on poetry, history and biography, all of which is centered around Southern life and culture.

Collection Overview

Mary Norton Kratt's papers concern her career as a writer, newspaper journalist, biographer and poet. She wrote on a range of topics, but for the most-part, her interest was in Southern culture in the twentieth century. This collection contains large and significant subseries on Carlyle Marney, the famed Baptist preacher; and another on the culture that surrounded the textile mill working class.

Kratt did a great deal of research before writing her books. Her research on Rev. Carlyle Marney involved interview of many people who knew him. Kratt taped these interviews, and the tape cassettes are a part of this collection. However, these tapes have been transferred to the Oral History Section.

Photographs from two of Kratt's books, Charlotte: Spirit of the South and Legacy: the Myers Park Story, are also included in this collection. The last series of the Kratt collection itemizes the photos and also indicates which book it came from as well as the page number.

Collection Arrangement

As this collection has arrived at this repository in bits and pieces, the latest accession has required complete reworking. The collection is now arranged in seven series: the first containing articles about M.N. Kratt; series 2 contains her written work (subdivided into subseries on articles, books and poetry); series 3 contains her collected information on other authors; series 4 contains subject files concerning her research, followed by a series of audio tape recordings, and lastly a series of photographs.
