Summary: Papers of a Charlotte dentist, minister, and civil rights activist, who was the first African-American to run for governor of North Carolina. Consists chiefly of clippings and correspondence documenting his involvement in the desegregation of schools, public accommodations, hospitals, the North Carolina Dental Society, and the Shrine Bowl. Also includes information on voter registration projects, gubernatorial campaign files (1968 and 1972), material concerning Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a dissertation about Hawkins by Dr. Gregory Davis.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
   
Reginald Armistice Hawkins was born in Beaufort, N.C., on November 11, 1923 to Lorena Smith and Charles C. Hawkins. He was graduated from Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) in 1948. After receiving a doctorate of dental surgery from Howard University in 1948, Hawkins practiced dentistry in Charlotte. During the Korean War, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He earned also bachelor (1956) and masters (1973) of divinity degrees from JCSU. Ordained a minister in the United Presbyterian Church, USA, he held the pastorate at Charlotte's H. O. Graham Metropolitan Church from 1978 to 1985. JCSU conferred an honorary degree upon him in 1962 and inducted him into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. The first black candidate for governor in North Carolina, Hawkins unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination in 1968 and in 1972. The long-time civil rights activist retired in 1987 and resides in Charlotte. [For more information, see series 1, Memorabilia, and series 2 and 3.]
   
   
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
   
This collection documents the professional, political, and civil rights activities of Hawkins. Much of the collection is newspaper clippings. The Reginald A. Hawkins Papers are divided into the following series:

1:1 BOMBING (1965-66): correspondence and clippings relating to the bombing of the homes of Hawkins, Julius Chambers, Fred Alexander, and Kelly Alexander, Sr. on November 22, 1965.
   
1:2 CIVIL RIGHTS CORRESPONDENCE (1955-70): includes letter (5-12-59) to Kelly Alexander, Sr. about Robert Williams of Monroe, N.C.; telegrams from Martin Luther King Jr., including invitation to participate in march from Selma, Ala. (1965); and Hawkins's opposition to the proposed Charlotte Mecklenburg consolidation (1970).
   
1:3 CIVIL RIGHTS WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE, "TO FULFILL THESE RIGHTS" (1965-66): includes statements by President Lyndon B. Johnson, a report and recommendations to the conference, and a list of participants, which included Hawkins.
   
1:4 DENTISTRY CORRESPONDENCE (1954-73): subjects relate to the Old North State Dental Society, admittance of blacks to the UNC CH School of Dentistry, selection of the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, membership qualifications for dental staff at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, membership for black dentists in North Carolina Dental Society, Hawkins's difficulty in obtaining malpractice insurance, dental services at Charlotte Memorial for poor and minorities, and North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners v. Hawkins, Nash, and Stinson.

1:7- 8 DENTISTRY LITIGATION NORTH CAROLINA STATE BOARD OF DENTAL EXAMINERS V. REGINALD HAWKINS (1971-73, n.d.): relates to malpractice charges brought against Hawkins and other Charlotte dentists concerning services rendered for poor and minority children.

1:15 JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY (1967-68, 1986, n.d.): includes material relating to Hawkins's opposition to the closing of JCSU's seminary.
   
1:16-17 MEDICAL FACILITIES (1956-67, n.d.): relates to attempt to desegregate Charlotte Memorial Hospital and facilitate closing of Good Samaritan Hospital. Includes "A Study of Negro Hospital Facilities and Services for Charlotte and Mecklenburg County" (1954), correspondence, and position statements. Material primarily generated by the Hawkins chaired Hospital Committee of the Charlotte Medical Society.
   
1:18-19 MEMORABILIA (1969-72, 1978, 1995, n.d.): includes a biographical sketch (ca. 1995); invitations to inaugurals of presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; Christmas cards from then Senator Kennedy and President Johnson; a program from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s address at Johnson C. Smith University (1966); and a program for installation services of Hawkins as pastor of H. O. Graham Metropolitan Church (1978).
   
1:20-21 POLITICS CORRESPONDENCE (1959-72): items relating to Hawkins's support of John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign, voter registration, and Hawkins's two gubernatorial races. Includes letters (1-21-59; 9-24, 10-10, 10-31-60; and 1-12-61) from Kennedy; telegram (3-8-65) from Martin Luther King Jr. citing the need "to respond to the vicious mal treatment of defenseless citizens of Alabama, because of their desire to vote"; an exchange of letters (2/1966) with Elisabeth G. Hair of the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections concerning purges from the voter rolls; and a telegram (4-2-68) from Dorothy F. Cotton of the SCLC informing Hawkins that King would have to postpone his trip to North Carolina due to his involvement in the Memphis garbage workers strike [King was assassinated two days later].
   
2:1 POLITICS DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE (1964-72): relates to 1968 convention in Chicago, including the challenge to the racial composition of the North Carolina delegation made before the Credentials Committee. (See also box 2:5)
   
2:2- 4 POLITICS GUBERNATORIAL CAMPAIGNS (1967-72, n.d.): items relating to Hawkins's 1968 and 1972 North Carolina gubernatorial campaigns.
   
2:7 POLITICS--LITIGATION STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA V. REGINALD A. HAWKINS (1965-66): documents Hawkins's trial for misrepresentation as a voter registrar.
   
2:5 POLITICS NORTH CAROLINA COMMITTEE FOR MORE REPRESENTATIVE POLITICAL PARTICIPATION (1968-69, n.d.): created in response the racial composition of the North Carolina delegation to the 1968 Democratic National Convention, this Hawkins chaired group also concerned itself with minority voter registration and the appointments of minorities to state government committees. (See also box 2:1)
   
2:6 POLITICS NORTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC PARTY (1969-71, n.d.)
   
  2:8-9 POLITICS VOTER EDUCATION PROJECT (1962-68): relates primarily to this Southern Regional Council project. Documents voter registration drives conducted in Charlotte by the Mecklenburg Organization on Political Affairs and the Southwide Conference of Black Elected Officials held in Atlanta (1968). Includes reports and copies of V.E.P. News.
   
2:10 POVERTY ISSUES (1964-68, n.d.): includes Hawkins's testimony before the US Senate Subcommittee on Poverty (1965).
   
2:11 PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS (1955-66, 1983, n.d.): includes complaint against Douglas Airport for alleged discrimination in its dining facilities.
   
  2:12 SHRINE BOWL (1965-66, n.d.): relates to efforts by the Charlotte NAACP to desegregate an annual all star football game between North Carolina and South Carolina high school seniors. Documents the exclusion of Jimmie Kilpatrick, a black running back at Charlotte's Myers Park High School, from the North Carolina squad of the 1965 Shrine Bowl football game in Charlotte and the subsequent agreement to desegregate all succeeding Shrine Bowls.
   
2:13 YMCA (1963-66, n.d.): relates to segregation of the organization's facilities and Hawkins's attempt to gain membership.

This series is comprised of a copy of Gregory Davis's dissertation, "A Multi Disciplinary Critique of the Protest Accommodationalist Analysis of the Black Church and Black Leadership Styles with an Analysis of the Leadership Styles of Dr. Reginald Armistice Hawkins" (Unpublished dissertation, Union Graduate School of the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1985).
