Biographical Note

R. Stewart Lillard, junior was originally from eastern Tennessee (his father was the mayor of Decatur, Tennessee, a small town in that area) and that he matriculated at Davidson College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1962. From there, he earned a master's degree in American Literature in 1966 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. After that, he continued his education at George Peabody College (later renamed Vanderbilt University), where he earned an MLS degree in 1970.

In his career, Lillard delved into a variety of different pursuits. From 1965 to 1969, he taught English composition and literature at Arkansas State University, Pembroke State College (now the University of North Carolina at Pembroke) and Sue Bennett College (in Kentucky). As a librarian, he worked for Furman University (in South Carolina), the South Carolina State Library, the University of the South (in Sewanee, Tennessee), Queens University (in Charlotte, NC), and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Lillard's interests were varied and wide-ranging. He studied Korean history, medieval history, education, the Russian language, world fairs, and especially in the life and writing of Ralph Waldo Ellison. He was the President of the Mecklenburg Historical Association, he served as the Chairman of the Southern Books Competition Committee for the Southeastern Library Association, and is a life member of the East Tennessee Historical Association. He also ran (unsuccessfully) for election for a seat on the Charlotte City Council in 1989. He retired in 2006 and moved to suburban Washington, DC in Maryland.

Collection Overview

This collection contains materials concerning the interests of R. Stewart Lillard, who was at one time a cataloging librarian at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Lillard was interested in a wide range of subject, including world's fairs (the San Diego World's Fair in 1935-36, the Chicago World's Fair in 1933-34 and the Montreal Expo in 1967). He was also interested in the origins of the institution that later became the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library; Lena Jones Springs; his own campaign for a seat on the Charlotte City Council in 1989; the Charlotte election of 2000; and most especially-the life and writing of Ralph Ellison. About eighty per cent of the collection contains material by or about Ralph Ellison, including an article that Lillard wrote about Ellison's tastes in and use of music. The three folders that make up R. Stewart Lillard senior's series in this collection pertain to Spiro T. Agnew, President Carter's inauguration and Senator Eugene McCarthy's presidential election campaign.

Collection Arrangement

This collection is arranged into two series: the first contains the papers of R. Stewart Lillard junior, and the second for the papers of R. Stewart Lillard, senior. Junior's series is divided into nine subseries, which reflect the varied interests of his pursuits.

Three of the subseries in junior's series concern world's fairs. Though world's fairs are most commonly identified by the name of the cities where they are held (i.e. Chicago World's Fair), they are given official titles and identified by those titles by library catalogers (i.e. "Century of Progress International Exposition (1933-1934, Chicago, Ill.)"). Since researchers are guided to find materials on these institutions by their official names, they are identified by their official titles here in this collection.
