| Stanford Raynold Brookshire was born on July
22, 1905 in Troutman, N.C. He moved to Charlotte and briefly worked for
the Charlotte Observer following his graduation from Trinity College
(now Duke University) in 1927. After several jobs, including working in
his father's construction firm, Brookshire established Engineering Sales
Company of Charlotte, Inc., with his brother, Voris G. Brookshire, in 1933.
He was elected president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce in 1960. Brookshire
married Edith Mitchell in 1934 and they had two children, Carolyn (b. 1936)
and Stanford R. Jr. (b. 1941). He died on October 10, 1990 in Charlotte.

| The Stanford R. Brookshire Papers are divided
into two subgroups: Mayoral Papers and Personal and Family Papers. |

| Subgroup I, MAYORAL PAPERS
(1960-1970), is divided into the following series: |
| |
|
| Series 1: SUBJECT FILES (1960-1969)
provides the most extensive documentation of Brookshire's administration
of civic affairs. Organized according to Brookshire's system of subject
classification, the files contain correspondence and related material on
committees appointed by Brookshire, on City departments, on urban renewal
and other city improvement projects, on special civic events, and on national
organizations of city government officials. Of particular interest are files
relating to federal funding for urban renewal projects, reflecting the efforts
by both federal and municipal governments during the 1960s to eliminate
poverty and blight in the inner city. Funding for Charlotte came about through
such programs as Model Cities and the Brooklyn Area Plan for the redevelopment
of downtown's slum area. |

| Also reflected in this series are Charlotte's
organized efforts to desegregate peacefully, particularly through the Mayor's
Community Relations Committee, established by Brookshire in 1961 to reconcile
complaints of discrimination in the community (see also Charlotte Mecklenburg
Community Relations Committee Records). |

| Series 2: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE,
(1961-1970) contains correspondence to and from Brookshire generally
not relating to the administration of official city business, and including
letters of congratulations, thanks, praise, criticism, and complaint. Also
includes Brookshire's reelection campaign correspondence (1963, 1965, 1967)
and letters to Brookshire relating to desegregation in Charlotte, in particular,
to the Poor People's March in 1968 and the bombing of the homes of four
African American civil right leaders in 1965. |

| This series contains Brookshire's subject files
during his four two year terms. Organized according to his subject classification,
the files contain correspondence and related material on the functions of
city government with which Brookshire was most directly involved and on
his national, state, and local activities. Included are files on citizen's
advisory committees and administrative committees appointed by Brookshire;
urban renewal and other city improvement projects; city departments; issues
before the City Council (and occasionally the Mecklenburg Board of County
Commissioners); special civic events and projects; and national organizations
of city government officials. |

| Most substantially documented in these files
is Charlotte's involvement in urban renewal, made possible by an increased
availability of federal funds for locally administered programs. This involvement
reflects the effort during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations to redevelop
the nation's cities. Documentation includes correspondence and related material
between city and federal agencies concerning grants, appropriations, and
implementation of projects; between Brookshire and Congressional members
concerning legislation of urban renewal bills; and between Brookshire and
local agencies and committees charged with implementing the programs. |

| Also documented are the activities of national
organizations, such as the Urban Coalition and the National League of Cities,
that served as liaisons between local and federal governments and that facilitated
implementation of urban renewal programs. |
