Bruce Stuart Roberts was born on February 4, 1930 in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to Marion McNally and Charles Wesley Roberts. He graduated from New York University (B.S., 1951) and attended the University of Florida in 1954. During the Korean War, Roberts served in the United States Air Force (1951-53). In 1957, he married writer Nancy Correll (b. 1924). They have two children: Nancy Lee and David Correll. Roberts began his career as a reporter with the Tampa Tribune (1954-55). Following a stint (1956-58) as editor and publisher of the Lumberton Post, Lumberton, N.C. and Scottish Chief, Maxton, N.C., he served as a staff photographer for The Charlotte Observer (1959-61) and director of photography for Wilmington, Del., newspapers (1962-63).
