49er Card Machine - The 49er Card Machine is a black vending box on the wall near the first floor color printer. On the second floor the card machine is located between the Reserve Desk and the Xerox Copy Center. Directions for adding money to your card are posted near each machine.

Call Number - a unique combination of letters and numbers assigned to each book in the library. The General Collection and Periodical Collection are arranged by Library of Congress (LC) call numbers. Those call numbers begin with letters.
Career Center - Atkins 150 is the location of the UNCC Career Center. To reach it, exit the Library and walk to your left until you reach their entrance.
Catalog - a compilation of records describing the contents of a particular library collection or group of collections. A library catalog contains records of items such as books, periodicals, videos, audio tapes, and CD-ROMs. More and more catalogs are including records for Web sites and other e-resources that complement and enhance the library's collection.

Channel 22 - The university's television station, Channel 22 is also housed on the first floor of the library. The station personnel produce programs, provide technical support to distance education classes, provide videoconferencing, and create tapes and DVD's for campus use.

Circulation Desk - Circulation Desk is the desk where books and equipment are checked out, renewed and returned. You may also place a hold on a book or report a book missing from the shelves. The Circulation Desk is located on the first floor to your right as you enter the Library. You may also borrow laptops at the Circulation Desk.
Citation - Information that indicates exactly how to find a book, periodical article, Web site or other information. The citation provides author, title, publisher and date; in the case of chapters and periodical articles it also includes page numbers.
Classrooms - There are several classrooms located in the library. The rooms numbers are Atkins 124, Atkins 125, Atkins 126, and Atkins 143, all located on the first floor of the library. Atkins 273 is located on the second floor of the library.
Coffee Shop - The Ritazza Coffee Shop is located on the lower level of the Library on the west side of the building overlooking the SAC. In addition to a selection of beverages, soups, sandwiches and pastries, the coffee shop has computers, a copier, a printer and wireless access. The coffee shop hours match those of the library. The 49er card can be used for purchases.

Color Printer - Color printer is located on the first floor of the Library near the black and white printer and the copy card vending machine.
Computers - Computers are located on the first, second and third floors of the Library. Most of the computers have productivity software including Microsoft Office, Novell, SAS, SPSS. etc. The exception is the two pods of computers in the reference area which have only Internet access. Floors five through eight also have express computer stations across from the elevators.

Copy Center - Copy Center is located on the second floor of the Library to the right as you face the Reserve Desk. Counseling Center - Atkins 158 is the location of the UNCC Counseling Center. To reach it, exit the Library and walk to the left, turn left at the corner of the building and walk until you see their entrance.

Dale Halton Reading Room - Dale Halton Reading Room is a collection of popular current fiction and nonfiction, the Browsing Collection, located at the west side of the main floor of the Library, overlooking the SAC. The room also houses a collection of Pepsi memorabilia tracing the history of Pepsi-Cola in Charlotte. Also this is the only Quiet Study Area on the first floor of the Library.

Government Documents - a collection of materials issued by the U. S., N. C. state, United Nations and Charlotte-Mecklenburg governments. Print collection is located on the 3rd floor. Documents on microform are located on the 2nd floor.
Group Study Rooms - Group study rooms are small, private rooms reserved for the use of groups of two or more people who need a place to work together on projects without disturbing others. Book these rooms through the Information Desk just inside the entrance to the Library.

Journal - A type of magazine that is written for experts in a subject area. Articles are usually signed, lengthy, written in a scholarly style and often include a bibliography. Journals are often published by academic or association presses and peer-reviewed by a board of experts. In Atkins Library, they are on the second floor, arranged in call-number order among other magazines. They are sometimes called scholarly journals or scholarly periodicals.

Microform - Is a space saving format for storing photographically reduced images onto film. Microfiche and microfilm are two types of microform. A microform reader/printer is required to read or copy information from microforms. These materials are located on the 2nd floor of the library. The Reserve Desk personnel can assist you.

NASA Collection - NASA-produced educational materials are located on the 2nd floor of the library. Reserve Desk personnel can assist you.
Networked Print Stations - Networked print stations allow patrons to print internet and production files in the library. Patrons use their 49er accounts or guest printing cards. Two print stations are located on the Main Floor and one print station is located on the 2nd floor. There is also a printer in the Ritazza coffee shop that is not networked. All printers take the 49er card or guest copy card for payment.
Newspapers - Are periodicals issued at frequent intervals (daily, weekly, semi-weekly) containing news, editorials, advertisements and other articles of current interest. Current newspapers are in the 2nd floor reading area near the Reserve Desk. Older issues are shelved by call number on the 2nd floor.

Phillips Collection - Phillips Collection is a collection of Holy Land pottery on permanent display on the Main Floor. This display is flanked by seasonal exhibits from the Special Collections Department of the Library.

Prak Collection - The Prak collection of approximately 900 rare and antiques atlases are house in three areas of the library. Some are on the lower level, cataloged with the call number "G," others that are extremely delicate or rare and in Special Collections, and some are on the eighth floor housed with the oversized books.
Presentation Support Desk - Presentation Support Desk is located to the right of the Information Desk on the main floor of the Library. This desk provides technology support including assistance with productivity software, scanning of documents and images, Novell accounts, and network connectivity.
Primary Source - A Primary Source is the original resource that first reported research or ideas. These may include newspapers, interviews, research reports, scholarly journal articles, trade journals, conference proceedings, dissertations, Web sites, diaries, letters, etc.

Quiet Study Area - Quiet Study Area is a designated place in the Library where people can go to study quietly without being disturbed by printers, cell phones, or the conversation of others. Library monitors patrol the quiet area to ensure that there is compliance. The Dale Halton Reading Room is the only quiet area on the main floor.

Reference Desk - Reference Desk is staffed by librarians who answer questions involving search queries. The Reference Desk is located on the main floor to the left of the Information Desk as you enter the Library.
Reference Librarian - The person responsible for assisting patrons in finding information and resources in the library. A Reference Librarian often specializes in a certain subject area but is also familiar with general information resources and how to use them.

Reserves - Are books or other materials that are kept at the Circulation Desk at the request of an instructor, in order to assure greater availability to an entire class. There are usually time limitations indicating the length of time an item can be checked out to a student.

Subject Heading - Is an agreed upon word/phrase (also referred to as controlled vocabulary) to describe and define a concept or thing. Library catalogs, indexes and electronic databases all make use of controlled vocabulary to provide consistent access to books, articles and other material. Subject headings can be words or phrases under which all material dealing with that area is entered in an index or library catalog. To conduct a successful and efficient subject search in the library's catalog or in an article database, it is necessary to know the predefined subject heading.
